Icon of British design Originally, the tradition-conscious Brits regarded the lamp as modernist, although it later became a design classic. In the early years, the Bestlite lamps were used mainly in garages and even in the hangar of the Royal Air Force due to the unlimited adjustability providing optimum illumination. It was only when former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill placed a Bestlite table lamp on his desk in Whitehall that the Bestlite lamps eventually became a true icon in the UK. Their designer, Robert Dudley Best, was one of the best-known British designers of the 20th century.
